How a 100g kitten ruined summer break......

During the quarantine, my son and I regularly walked down to a local shop that had a bunch of kittens and fed them.

The other day we walked past the shop and our friendly kittens were not there anymore but the shopkeeper motioned for us to walk inside and he showed us a box with 3 itty bitty babies. Unfortunately one was dead, one was nearly dead, and one seemed ok, but all were covered in urine and feces. The shopkeeper indicated the mama cat was gone.

My son was in tears seeing the dead kitten and without thinking we swooped up the other two and rushed them home. One kitten passed away a few hours later, but the last one seemed pretty strong.

I rushed to the vet clinic to buy kitten formula and bottles, but this little kitty refused the bottle. He refused with the strength of 10 kittens! I managed to force feed him with a syringe, but that was not going to be sustainable as he was not getting nearly enough to eat.

After 3 days of that I took him to the vet and they showed me how to tube feed him. I'll admit, it's much less stressful tubing him and knowing he's eaten enough an not having to battle with him. I am still trying to train him to suckle and have different nipples on their way from Bangkok.

While I know I'm doing the right thing, saving his life and teaching my son to have compassion for all life, I have really screwed up.

We had planned a trip to Krabi next week. It's our anniversary and the end of a very long and rough school year. Now we have had to cancel because we have to feed this little kitty every few hours. I am so disappointed and mad. MAD MAD MAD.

It's unlikely we'll be able to do much this summer break because of this little guy. It's difficult to not be too hard on myself about this.

We do not plan to keep this kitten, so if you know anyone looking to adopt......

Sooner the better!
