If you remember my post from about a year ago, I was struggling to get my Thai driving license. I had decided to quit and recover from what was a very stressful process, then Covid happened. We are still in the midst of a global pandemic, but Thailand had a brief respite and no local transmission for quite a long time. I took the opportunity to try again.
This time I went through a driving school. They don't really teach you much, but they do let you take the test 1 million time so you can memorize the correct answers and allow you a car to use.
Good new, I finally have my driver's license for car and motorbike!
We have no plans to buy a car right now, but we did buy a motorbike. Twice.
The first bike we bought was a bit of a flop. The first week it needed a new starter. By the second week it needed a new radiator, brakes, lights, and something else in the engine. To be honest I stopped paying attention. That was it. I was done throwing good money after bad. For what it would cost to fix the bike, we could buy a much newer and better bike for what it would cost to fix the old one.
Time to cut our losses.
We did get around to buying a new better motorbike from a friend's uncle that others I know have purchased from. So far, so good. (Knock wood)
Of course with motorbikes come helmets. I do not believe helmets are something one should cut corners on or look for a bargain. I can buy a kids helmet at the Big C for 200 baht, $6 usd. This is where everyone tries to send me. I DO NOT WANT A BARGAIN HELMET, but no one really understands that. We all got a quality helmets, but my son quickly outgrew his. This is to be expected. It's also not a sweatshirt. You don't buy it extra big and let them grow into it. It needs to fit properly.
I could not find what we needed in Hat Yai. I think I have been to every motorcycle shop in the city. When I ask about *S or XS, the only reply I get is "Do not have".
*According to every size chart my son should wear an XS or possibly a S depending on fit.
Finally I contacted the manufacturer of the most popular brand in Thailand. My son's current helmet is their Kids size. Yes, one size for all kids.
According to their size chart, Kids is 54cm. My son measures 53cm, but this helmet is too small. The manufacturer and I went around in circles. The helmet should fit, I'm not measuring right. Once my son returned from school, I took a picture of me measuring the head and the fit of the helmet. Turns out they make their helmets to "Asian heads". We have giant misshapen European heads therefore their helmets will not fit. At least not in this case. This is so frustrating. I did finally find a shop that specializes in racing and motor cross helmets that said they could order something for us and will help us find a good fit.
So, fingers crossed we will find something!
