Latvia.....

A year in Myanmar can really make you long for your home and also make you forget any issues you had in the past.

No place is perfect. Anywhere you live in the world will have problems, it's a matter of what problems you are willing to accept and deal with and what obstacles are too big to overcome.

I loved living in Latvia, but it wasn't perfect. There is a huge Russian influence in Riga. Not necessarily bad, but if you know and understand the history of the Baltic region, it's not that great either. Decades of Soviet oppression and wars can do that. There have been a few times I have been mocked by local Russians for not speaking Russian, but only speaking Latvian and English.

Summer is the most beautiful in Latvia, but it's short. Winters are long. They can be pretty when the snow blankets everything. They can also be harsh and ugly when the trees lose their leaves, everything is grey and the communist block buildings are all you see in the city. In the summer, green leafy trees help disguise the ugly apartments, but in the winter they are just huge grey monstrosities.

So far the summer has been great. Midsummer or Ligo, a wedding, friends, parks, malls, shopping, eating, the country side. A camping trip later and maybe a trip to Ventspils. As much as I don't want to leave, I also am anxious to start our new life in Thailand.
