Our first school break. We took a trip to the island of Koh Lipe. From home it's an hour and a half van ride to the pier and another hour and a half speed boat ride.
It was such a lovely place. We were at the end of the low season so many places were frantically fixing up and doing last minute construction, getting ready for the busy season, but the beaches were amazing!
Crystal clear and warm waters and white sand beaches.
We stayed in a little hut, directly on the beach. The hut was simple, no A/C, nothing special except the location. At night we would return to the hut after dinner and 100's of hermit crabs were shuffling around outside.
It was paradise and I felt incredibly thankful that we can go to these places. That we can take our son to these amazing places and give him amazing experiences. He may not grow up in the same house for his whole life, but he will be able recall the places he went, they people he met, the things he saw, and the cultures he experienced.
Another thing I love about travel are the people we meet along the way. The caretakers of our resort was from Myanmar, and I think he appreciated a "mingalabar" now and then.
We met a fellow from Ireland that took the year off from his career to travel around Asia. An Italian man with his Greek/American girlfriend that thinks we should move to Qatar. A man from Colorado that had never been to Thailand and just decided to come and explore for a month or two.
However, after a really rough speed boat ride home, my son announced he will NEVER ride in another speed boat. It may be a while before we return.
No bother, lots of other places to explore in South East Asia!
And for the first time, in a long time, we were excited to go HOME.
